Hanon Exercises: Complete List of All 60
The Virtuoso Pianist (Le Pianiste virtuose) by Charles-Louis Hanon (1819–1900) has 60 exercises in three parts: Part I (Nos. 1–20) is five-finger formulas for evenness and independence; Part II (Nos. 21–43) adds thumb crossings, the scales in all 12 keys (No. 39), the chromatic scale (No. 40) and the arpeggios (No. 41); Part III (Nos. 44–60) is the virtuoso part: repeated notes, double notes, thirds, octaves, trills and tremolos. Hanon’s preface says to start at ♩ = 60 and work up to ♩ = 108. All 60 can be practiced in Estudio de Piano with a microphone or MIDI; 32 are verified note by note and the rest are being checked against a second source.
The three parts
Part I: exercises 1–20
Preparatory exercises in C major: the hand travels along the keyboard repeating an eight-note formula. No thumb crossings. This is where everyone starts. See Part I.
Part II: exercises 21–43
Transcendent exercises: thumb crossings, stretches and shifts, plus the scales and arpeggios in every key. See Part II.
Part III: exercises 44–60
Virtuoso exercises: repeated notes, double notes, scales in thirds and octaves, trills and tremolos. Only once the first two parts are clean. See Part III.

Frequently asked questions
How many Hanon exercises are there?
Sixty, in three parts: 1–20 (preparatory), 21–43 (transcendent, with scales and arpeggios in Nos. 39 to 41) and 44–60 (virtuoso).
Which Hanon exercise should I start with?
No. 1, at ♩ = 60 or slower, hands separately. Move on once the previous one sounds even at a comfortable tempo; you do not need to reach ♩ = 108 on each one before going on.
Is Hanon in the public domain?
Yes. Hanon died in 1900 and Le Pianiste virtuose is in the public domain. Modern editions (their fingerings, revisions and added texts) are not; our transcription and texts are our own.
Where are the Hanon scales?
In exercise 39: every major and minor scale. You will find them with their fingering in the piano scales chart.
Next step: how to practice Hanon.
